HOW TO BECOME A COACH

Procedure for Applying

Anyone interested in becoming a competitive coach for SYSA should contact SYSA’s Coach Coordinator who will then advise him or her as to how to obtain the appropriate training, licenses and background clearances for the age group you are interested in coaching.
 

Licensing and Training

In order to coach a Competitive Team, you need to have the appropriate state license:

US Youth Soccer License (SRI)

Age Group

Level 1 Youth Module (Y1)

U6 & U8

Level 2 Youth Module (Y2)

U10 & U11

E License

U12

D License

U14 & Above

Reimbursement

D License:

  • Soccer Rhode Island will reimburse the coach 1/3 the amount for a D License. SYSA will reimburse the coach the remainder of the fee.

Youth Certificates/Licenses:

  • Soccer Rhode Island does not reimburse the coach for Y1, Y2 or E Licenses, therefore, in these cases SYSA will reimburse the coach the full cost of the licensing fee.
  • SYSA board has final say on all coaching assignments.

Coach Selection Process

SUMMARY of the selection criteria for SYSA Competitive Coaches:

  • Interested coaches should notify SYSA’s  Competitive Coordinator by June if they are interested in coaching a competitive team in the Tournaments, Indoor & Spring

  • The Competitive Committee will review the list of interested coaches and select coaches for the competitive season based on specific criteria, included but not limited to: 

    • Training Methods
    • Adhering Club Philosophy

    • Coaching Seniority

    •  Acquired Licenses

    • Coaching Experience

    • Ability to coach and relate to players

    • Commitment SYSA Players

  • The Competitive Committee will submit the list of selected coaches to the SYSA Board for ratification at the October general membership meeting
